Preparations for Dyno Tuning

Preparing your car for a dyno tuning session requires ensuring that the vehicle is in peak mechanical health to handle racetrack-level stress. If your car experiences issues on the rollers, you will likely be turned away or charged a premium for  time spent fixing basic mechanical mistakes.

Following a comprehensive checklist will ensure your session runs safely and efficiently:

1. Fluids and Leak Prevention

  • Zero Leaks: Check thoroughly for oil, coolant, fuel, or power steering leaks. Dynos feature sensitive electronics that can be damaged by escaping fluids, and shops will charge cleanup fees.
  • Fresh Fluids: Ensure your engine oil and coolant are topped up and fresh. A high-load dyno session is not the place for old, degraded oil.
  • Cooling System: Verify that your radiator fans function properly and the cooling system holds pressure to prevent overheating.

2. Fuel System

  • Full Tank: Arrive with a full tank of fuel. Dyno tuning burns through an incredibly large volume of fuel during back-to-back pulls.
  • Correct Octane: Fill up with the exact premium octane rating (e.g., 99 Octane / E5) that you plan to run continuously after the tune.
  • Filters and Lines: Ensure your fuel filter is clean and all high-pressure lines and fittings are mechanically secure.

3. Engine and Drivetrain

  • Ignition System: Install fresh spark plugs with the correct gap and heat range. Weak ignition coils or worn plugs will manifest as a misfire under high boost/load.
  • No Air Leaks: Perform a vacuum and boost leak test beforehand. Unmetered air leaks distort the data, making an accurate fuel tune impossible.
  • Exhaust Integrity: Fix any exhaust leaks before the primary oxygen sensor or wideband bung. Even a pinhole leak introduces outside oxygen, causing a false lean reading on the tuner's equipment.
  • Clutch and Drivetrain: Ensure your manual clutch is in excellent condition and capable of holding the target torque without slipping. Check wheel bearings and axles for excessive play.

4. Tires and Mechanical Clearances

  • Tire Condition: Inspect your tires for damage, punctures, or dry rot. Tire blowouts on a rolling road are incredibly dangerous.
  • Tire Pressure: Inflate tires to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended highway/high-load specifications.
  • Ride Height & Body Work: Ensure the car has enough ground clearance to drive up the dyno ramps. Remove mud flaps from the driven wheels so they do not catch on the rollers.
